To the editor:
As a senior citizen of Woodstock, N.B., who was stuck in a snowbank on I-95 N near the Houlton exit on Sunday, Nov. 2 in that disastrous storm, I very much want to thank all the wonderful people of Houlton who helped me that day.
I was returning to Woodstock from Bangor after delivering my son to the airport for a flight to California. I thought I could make it back even though my son wanted me to stay over in Bangor, but I was concerned about leaving my little dog alone for a whole day and night, so I was trying to make it back. A big high truck with its back lights flashing kept me on the road, but the visibility was getting steadily worse by the hour and when the truck got off at the Houlton exit (as did many other cars which were behind me), I foolishly thought I could keep going, but at that point I slid off the road (I guess the Lord looks after his stupid sheep as well as his sensible ones).
The kind and courteous police officer who found me in the snowbank and drove me to the next exit (I don’t know how he could see the road as the visibility was so bad) called the tow truck and delivered me safely to the Shiretown Inn. I had a very comfortable room (everything worked) and the caring motel staff called a courtesy car the next morning to get me to my car (they would not let me cross the road on the ice). The very helpful York’s towing service had my car running and warmed up for me (there was only minor damage). All combined to make me feel cared for as I made my way home.
As an 86-year-old Canadian I am grateful we live next door to such a caring community in Maine. Thanks again to everyone.
