Members of Boy Scout Troop 155, Greater Houlton area, spent the weekend at Acadia National Park Nov 7-9.
The troop attended the Blackwoods Camporee with approximately 300 other boys from around the state. The troop spent Friday evening setting up camp as they got there a little late in the evening. After a chilly night, which everyone all survived, the boys took their turn at cooking breakfast.
Ployes were in order for breakfast; this is a buckwheat-type pancake that the troop members learned about during a trip to the camporee in Ft. Kent. To the leaders’ surprise, they found they could buy them in Houlton.
After breakfast the boys participated in a service project for the Blackwoods Campground. They cleared brush and logs that had been recently cut. This took most of the morning. After lunch, they participated in some of the activities that were offered. There were so many that they couldn’t do them all.
The Scouts participated in Scout Skills competition, along with placing high in the fire building category and learned some new knots. There were many areas to explore and some even braved the hike up Cadillac Mountain.
After the activities, everyone all helped prepare the Scout dish for the cooking competition. The local troop chose the dutch oven category and made Wicked Baked Beans. Everyone sat around the campfire and warmed up with hot chocolate and headed to bed early, as the boys were exhausted after the eventful day.
On Sunday morning, Troop 155 attended Vesper services, a flag retirement with the largest flag to have been flown in Maine and a closing ceremony.
