Riva Hawkes, Special to The County

I saw Cheryl Sewall Connelly recently and she informed me that she is about to leave for Florida , accompanied by husband, Peter, but they will be back and forth between Maine and Florida during the winter. They are hoping that “Old Man Winter “ doesn’t  interfere with their plans.

Tom Hawkes, with son Chris and wife, have been my recent visitors and, fortunately, the weather cooperated and the day was fine when they were here and they had no problems on the drive back to Glenburn. The female gold finch are still feeding at my feeders, along with the nuthatches, chickadees and swallows but have not seen any bluejays for quite awhile. and have not been lucky enough to see either a male or female cardinal.
I have had a hard time keeping the feeders full and I now have a lonesome red squirrel who appears in the morning and eats his fill before the big gray squirrel appears and takes over. The other evening about dusk there were five deer tramping around my house from the front lawn and towards the back of the house, as there is where I throw out the bread and apples. They are very faithful in showing up about that time and when my neighbor has her grandchildren around they are really excited when the deer show up.
I wish my friend in Patten, Margaret, who likes to read about my deer, could see them herself.
