An Aroostook mystery: Sheriff disappears — The search continues for Deputy Sheriff Harold C. Hillman of Island Falls, an officer active in enforcement of the prohibitory law, who has been missing since Monday night, Dec. 21, when he went from his home to return a package of seized liquor to some Greek laborers who work in the local tannery.  

Sowing ‘local’ oats — The prevailing custom among county farmers is to seed heavily with oats — four to six bushels per acre. Knowing our conditions are quite different from other parts of Maine, our Experiment Station has not followed the statewide recommendation of less.

PT office aids Finnish relief — The Pioneer Times office will serve as a receiving agency in Southern Aroostook County for contributions for Finnish Relief. Residents, who are desirous of aiding the besieged Finns in their fight against invasion, may make contributions and they will be sent to the New York headquarters.
Christmas tree brightens Hodgdon — The large community Christmas tree has been put up at the junction of the Corner and Mill Roads and adds much to the holiday atmosphere. Many homes are attractively lighted as well.

Howard is magazine article author — Miss Barbara R. Howard, a senior from Houlton attending Colby College is the author of an article titled, “Advantages of a Small College,” which appears in a recent issue of the magazine, Literary Cavalcade.

Average teacher salary $5,369 — Maine teachers are receiving an average salary of $5,369, up $269 over last year, the Maine Teachers Association announced. The average salary for communities with a population of 10,000 or more is $5,847, while teachers in smaller communities of 1,000 or less receive an average of $4,386 per year.

Jail unveiled — A formal opening ceremony for the new County Jail at Houlton will be held Wednesday, Dec. 27, county officials announced. The day-long event begins with opening remarks by House Speaker John L. Martin, County Commission Chairman John McElwee, Aroostook County Sheriff Edgar Wheeler and Jail Administrator Dean Clukey.
Big Rock ski club organizes — A ski club at Big Rock in Mars Hill will begin organizing with a meeting Thursday night at the Mars Hill Community Center. It is to be a family club with programs for all ages; for more information contact David Parsons.
