Houlton Rec to hold meeting, vacation fun

Playground meeting

    The Houlton Parks and Recreation Department will be holding a playground committee meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend this meeting at the Gentle Memorial Building.

Houlton Rec vacation fun

    The Houlton Recreation Department will be offering the following activities during

the December school vacation break. All programs require a registration. To register, call 532-1310.
Vacation Fun Program — This program is for children in grades preK – grade 6. It will be offered on Monday, Dec. 29 and Tuesday, Dec. 30 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. Monday will feature gym games and crafts and Tuesday will be crazy games and McDonalds meal day. Participants will need to bring their own lunch on Monday, wear play clothes and bring sneakers. Cost is $5 per child per day plus the cost of the McDonalds meal.

Open gym and game room hours

    The Gentle Memorial Building will be open the following days and times for the vacation break for youth in grades 2-12. Anyone younger must be with an adult to attend open hours.
Saturday, Dec. 20 and Sunday, Dec. 21, 1-4 p.m.; Monday, Dec. 22, 2:45-5 p.m.; Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2-5 p.m.; closed Wednesday, Dec. 24 and Thursday, Dec. 25, “Merry Christmas”; Friday, Dec. 26, through Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1-4 p.m.; Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1-3 p.m.; closed Thursday, Jan. 1, “Happy New Year”;  and Friday, Jan. 2 through Sunday, Jan. 4, 1-4 p.m.

Hot Shot contest

    The Maine Recreation and Parks Association, The Maine Red Claws basketball organization and the Houlton Recreation Department invite Houlton area youth to participate in the 2014 Hot Shot competition.
The contest will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 10 a.m. at the Gentle Memorial Building. A practice session will be held prior to the shootoff at 9 a.m. for all youth participating. Age groups consist of boys and girls 9-10; 11-12 and 13-15. Awards will be given to the first three place winners in each boys’ and girls’ age division.
Winners will qualify to participate in the regional competition in Caribou in February.
Cost for the contest is $5 for Houlton residents and $10 for non-residents.
Registrations are required by Dec. 30.

Skating hours

    The Millar Civic Center will be open the following hours for public skating during the December school vacation break: Friday, Dec. 26, 2-4 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 28 through Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2-4 p.m.; closed Jan. 1 “Happy New Year”; Friday, Jan. 2 through Sunday, Jan. 4, 2-4 p.m. Admission to the Millar Civic Center is $3.50 for youth and $4 for adults. Skate rentals are $2. Party packages are also available. For more information, call 532-1313.
