Publishing company formed — The Pioneer Publishing Company has been organized at Houlton for the purpose of carrying on general printing and publishing. Officers are president, Charles A. Lyons and treasurer, Albert K. Stetson, both of Houlton.

Club directory — The following Houlton area clubs are listed in this week’s club directory: Tip Top Whist, The Shakespeare Club, Fact and Fiction, Ricker Travel Class, The Woman’s Club and the Houlton Music Club.

Young Republicans organize — The Aroostook Young Republicans announced today they are commencing to organize their ranks, forming clubs in every community in the county. Those initiating this activity are James P. Archibald of Houlton and George Blanchard and Margaret Ranlett of Presque Isle.
Airplane engines arrive in Houlton — Houlton’s application for a WPA (Works Progress Administration) project to construct quarters for an aviation training center has been approved. They intend to open shop as early as possible as indicated by the arrival last week of four crates of aircraft engines.

1964: Year in review — From the Editor’s Corner: While tragedy has a way of becoming only a memory, some good things of 1964 will continue on. The potato market seems strong and Interstate 95 promises great things for Southern Aroostook County, as does the sugar beet program.

BS-FromFiles-dc-pt-53RETIRES — Lex I. Vail, postmaster at Hodgdon since 1925, has resigned the position as of December 30, now that he has reached the compulsory retirement age of 70. Mr. Vail succeeded his father as postmaster in Hodgdon and together they have served the town during the 20th century. Another Vail was set to take over on a contract basis, as Lex’s son, James, was hired to handle the mail going forward.
Award-winning Yuletide homes — Ten homes in Houlton were selected by the Retail Trade Board to be awarded $10 cash prizes for their Christmas decorations: Chick Currie, Elm St.; Ronald Dickinson, Sterritt St.; Austin Durgin, Military St.; Phil Howe, School St.; James Kelly and Mrs. George Moody, both Columbia St.; Bernard Maher, Pleasant St.; Herschel McIntosh, Week St.; Mrs. Halson Richards, Park St. and Charles Wolhaupter, Burleigh Street.

Lady Shires ‘on a roll’ — The Houlton Lady Shires kept their record spotless Friday in six outings as they defeated Mt. Desert Island 53-37. Ellen Lee scored 17 points, Courtney Tilley, 11 points and Kim Dahl added 10 for the Shires. Sara Buswell had eight points and seven assists, while Liz Nelson had six points and 10 rebounds.
New courses at UMPI’s Houlton Center — The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Houlton Center will offer 20 new courses to include: Canadian Maritime English Literature, taught by Dr. Ronald Dow and Vietnam: A look at the Past, instructed by Leo B. Bell.
