On Sunday, the Southern Aroostook Minor Hockey Association (SAMHA) Varney Agency junior Black Hawk Bantams traveled to Hartland, N.B. for a game against Carleton.
The junior Black Hawks started out strong taking a 2-0 lead after the first period. Nate Delucca scored, assisted by Noah Reynolds and A.J. Henderson. Henderson also buried the puck on a pass from Nick Delucca.
The pace picked up in the second period with Carleton netting a pair of goals, while the junior Black Hawks picked up three more goals. Drew Marino found the back of the net twice, assisted by Nick Delucca, Zach Fitzpatrick and Madison Grant, while Fitzpatrick scored the other on a pass from Garrett Perkins.
With a 5-2 lead going into the third period, Bantams coach Chris Weber told the team that Carleton would be coming out strong, and they did, scoring two goals to bring the score within a goal 5-4. But with time running out and Carleton’s goalie pulled, Marino buried the puck into the empty net, completing his hat trick of three goals in a game to secure the win for the junior Black Hawks. Picking up the assist was Nick Delucca, earning the play maker (three assists in game).
Coach Weber was pleased with the outcome as the team didn’t give up and protected their lead in the final period.
Goalie Seth Rand played extremely well making timely saves and turning away scoring chances by Carleton.
