100 Years Ago-Jan. 13, 1915

Portland to Houlton in 11 hours — H. G. Richards passed through this town Monday driving a new 1915 eight cylinder Cadillac. They left Portland on Sunday, making the trip to Houlton in eleven hours and thirty-five minutes actual running time at an average speed of over twenty-five miles per hour, a most amazing and astounding feat for an automobile in Aroostook County in January.

Of local interest — Miss Josephine Peabody has resigned her position as stenographer with Archibalds and accepted a position with Powers & Powers. Mr. John Mitchell, who has been in charge of the Northern Telegraph Co. on this division for a number of years, tendered his resignation. Cottle Bros. dairy herd has just been given the tuberculin test and a clean bill of health.

Certified seed crop 1939 — Last year’s crop of certified seed potatoes was the second largest on record with 13,798,000 bushels. Irish Cobbler is the most popular with about 30 percent of the total being this variety, followed by Green Mountain and Bliss Triumph.
Grocery specials at The Grange — The following grocery specials were advertised this week at the Houlton Grange Store: Armour sliced bacon, 17 cents per pound; Ralston Corn Flakes, 2 pkgs. for 13 cents; Fancy California Oranges, 2 dozen for 33 cents and Camay bar soap, 3 for 17 cents.

Good elected Rotary president — Lawrence Good (Monticello) was elected president of the Kiwanis Club during its regular meeting Monday at the Wellington School. Elected to serve with him were Dana Cheney, vice president; Merritt Sewell, treasurer; and Hilston Foster, secretary.
Rec hosts equipment swap — The Houlton Parks and Rec Department is planning a winter sports equipment exchange, accepting such equipment as skates, skis, ski boots, snowshoes, sleds, toboggans, ski and winter clothing.

December ’89 coldest month ever — It’s official! December 1989 with an average temperature of 2.9 degrees Fahrenheit goes into the record books as the coldest month in 54 years of weather watching in the Houlton area.
Methodist Church spring spruce-up — The Stetson United Methodist Church celebrated its 150th year of serving the community [Patten] in 1989. Interior renovations were recently completed; the next step, according to Rev. Edwin Vonderheide, is the repair of the steeple which was removed the last week of December.
