BENEDICTA – Margaret McAvoy, 91, died peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on December 30, 2014. Margaret was one of 14 children, born September 29, 1923 in Benedicta, the daughter of Andrew J. and Elizabeth (Rush) Qualey. She had a very close relationship with her siblings and family of her late husband, Basil McAvoy.
She was a woman of grace, exceptional strength, and faith and was active in her home parish of Saint Benedict’s Catholic Church all of her life. She was in the Sodality and Daughters of Isabella. Visits to Margaret’s house almost always included a competitive game of cards or dice and snacks of delicious homemade sweets. She also enjoyed sewing, gardening and puzzles.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Cochrane of Chatham, NY, daughter Betty Elwell and her husband, Michael, of Sherman, son Edward and his wife, Ona, of Benedicta, son, Leo and his wife, Geri, of Patten, and her son, Danny of Sherman; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Basil; three of her daughters, Linda, Mary, and Anna; daughter-in-law, Barbara. She was also the last of the 14 Qualey children, Harold, Gilbert, Herbert, George, Francis, Arthur, Anna, Louise and Hazel Qualey, Irene McAvoy, Nora Schaefer, and Catherine St. Peter.
Friends called 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, January 4 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Benedicta where a Mass of Christian Burial was held 11 a.m. on Monday.
