Shires, Hawks win special hoop award

HOULTON, Maine — Before the holiday break, the Houlton Shiretowners were presented with a special banner from MaxPreps, a national sports media source.

MaxPreps was founded in August 2002 and is headquartered in Cameron Park, Calif. In April 2007, CBS Corporation acquired the business. As part of CBS Sports, MaxPreps (scoreboards, stat leaders and rankings for both girls and boys sports from each state) is available online, on-site, on-air and mobile.
“MaxPreps awards only five banners for top teams in each state, which are predicted to have a great season and to go deep into the playoffs, as well as having a legitimate shot at bringing home a state championship trophy,” said SFC Galen F. Thompson, recruiting and retention NCO Maine Army National Guard, who was at Houlton Alumni Gymnasium to present the award.
Houlton was ranked second in the state behind Portland, and the Hodgdon boys were fifth, but have yet to receive their banner. Taking third is Bonny Eagle and fourth, Falmouth high schools.
“As the presenting partner of the award, this shows how the National Guard is involved and interested in the community,” said Thompson.
MaxPreps, according to its website, is America’s Source for High School Sports.
“We are proud to be involved with America’s hometown heroes – the young men and women working hard to improve their skills, place team above self, and serve as inspirations to their local communities,” the information on the site reads.
“MaxPreps aspires to cover every team, every game and every player. We do this in partnership with nearly 40,000 varsity coaches throughout the United States,” the information stated. “MaxPreps is a youthful celebration of high school sports. Our national scale, creative marketing partnerships and targeted audience make MaxPreps an excellent medium for becoming an integral part in the lives of high school athletes and the people who support their aspirations and cheer their accomplishments.”
