Mrs. Mary Shaw, a resident of Patten, has been a recent visitor at the home of Clayton and Charlene Webb and son, Dale. They spent a pleasant day chatting and enjoying the lunch prepared by Clayton and Charlene before Mary left for home.
I was in Patten recently and dropped in at Mountain Heights to visit a longtime friend of mine, Mrs. Ronald (Gertrude) Webb, who has been at Mountain Heights for several years and really enjoys talking over old times with friends. Her neighbor, Mrs. Margaret Duffy, was out playing cards somewhere so missed seeing her and having a chat.
Have just found out that I no longer have just one red squirrel but four! Saw them all this noon when I went out to fill the feeders and there they were — one inside the big stationary feeder, one inside the feeder that hangs on a tree limb, one busily eating the crunchy peanut butter-lard mix on a tree limb and the fourth one on the ground eating what was being dropped from the other three.
Then the gray squirrel appeared and they all scrambled to safety to the fir tree some way from the feeding area. I imagine they all returned as soon as the big fellow left.
All this activity limits the chickadees, swallows, nuthatches and blue jays as to the time they get to eat, but I make sure the feeders are full and ready for them to return.
Still have the deer arriving about dusk to get their nightly supply of bread and apples. They wander from one side of the house to the front lawn to eat their nightly meal and can easily be seen from the road, but it doesn’t seem to bother them much. They are on alert and can be gone in seconds, they are so fast.
