‘Walk Away Winter’ program
The Houlton Parks and Recreation Department will once again sponsor the “Walk Away Winter,” which begins on Feb. 17 and runs for eight weeks. This program is held at the Houlton Recreation Department and encourages participants to get out and walk the winter away. Open hours for walking are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Gentle Memorial Building.
Participants will log in the amount of time they have walked each day they are at the rec center, with prizes awarded to the top five walkers at the end of the program. This program is free to the public. Participants can sign up by calling the Houlton Rec Department at 532-1310 by Feb. 17.
Cardboard box race
As part of Moosestompers Weekend, the Houlton Recreation Advisory Board will be sponsoring the first-ever Cardboard box race. Cardboard boxes have long been the stuff of forts, science projects, moving days and make believe spaceships. This Saturday, however, the cardboard box will assume its best role ever, a high speed, high occupancy racing vehicle.
The race will take place at Derby Hill at Community Park at 2 p.m. Just duct tape, paint, a creative touch and that refrigerator box may just be the ticket to glory. Rules are simple, everyone wears a helmet and the racing vessel must be made of cardboard only.
Registration is required for this event. Stop by the Houlton Recreation Department to fill out a form. Deadline is Friday, Feb. 6. At this free event, awards will be given to the fastest, most in a box, most creative and most spirit. Gather family and friends and start building.
For more information, contact the department at 533-1310.
Magic Show
Conjuring Carroll Magic Show will be part of the Moosestompers event on Saturday, Feb. 7. The show will be held at the Millar Civic Center at 3 p.m. in the viewing room. This free event is sponsored by Bangor Savings Bank.
