The Houlton Basketball Association concluded the annual Moosestompers Weekend, with the Inaugural All-Star Extravaganza, with 59 athletes who showcased their talents at the Gentle Memorial Building.
The Houlton Basketball Association Ladies League has successfully started with many different players getting involved, with the introductory game featuring The Force and Alley Oops.
The Force, behind the offensive efforts of Olivia McNally and Erika Jackett, won, 44-27. McNally tossed in 16 points, while Jackett had 11. Tanika Toby had a impressive game-high 16 rebounds also for The Force squad.
The Alley Oops team was led by the mother-daughter duo of Nancy Haggerty and Desiree Dow, both netting six points.
The 3-Point Shootout consisted of players shooting 20 balls on five designated spots around the arc in a one-minute time period.
Players in the shootout were James Bates, Matthew Drake, Sam Henderson and Kerron Armstrong of Houlton and Devin Hall of Calais.
In the final round, Henderson connected for 16 points, including draining his last five shots from the baseline, which included money balls to end the shootout with authority. Hall had 14 points and Bates finished with four points.
Houlton Pizza Hut manager Chris Carmichael crowned Henderson the Inaugural 3-Point Champion.
The Free Throw Contest was the next event in the All-Star special event, which saw 16 players representing eight teams.. The foul shooting contest was set up in three-round segments, which came down to a tie breaker to determine the overall champion.
Advancing to the final round of shooters were Lucas Flewelling, Jeremy Tarr, Henderson of Houlton, along with Jason Speedy and Chris Woodside of Calais.
The final round saw Henderson and Speedy each shooting 9-for-10, forcing a tie-breaker, which had Speedy going a perfect 5-for-5 and Henderson losing by one point. Matt Donahue awarded Speedy the trophy for being the free-throw champ.
The highlight of the All-Star Extravaganza was the Men’s League regulation game, matching up the Houlton Men’s All-Stars against the Calais Men’s League All-Stars.
Calais in a very intense game, pulled out a 108-105 win.
The final period put the pressure on Houlton to perform well and be competitive at the end, which they did, outscoring Calais, 29-16. Henderson had another explosive quarter scoring 11 points and shooting 5-for-6 from the line, as the Houlton team fell short.
Brandon Tomah of the Washington County’s Men’s League received the Most Valuable Player Award. He netted 16 total points, grabbed nine rebounds, snatched eight steals, handed off seven assists and swatted three opposing shots, while shooting 57.14 percent from the charity stripe and 46.1 from the field.
Henderson led the Houlton All-Stars with 32 points and 12 rebounds, while Peter Bates tossed in 24 points and hauled down 20 rebounds and had four assists; James Bates netted 17 points and had six rebounds; Frank DiStefano added 12 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, with Pat Goodall finishing with nine points and nine boards.
The second game of the Women’s League saw Hoops, We Did It Again defeating the Soup A Stars, 36-32.
Hoops, We Did It Again team captain Erica Tweedie led the way with a game high 19 points and eight rebounds, while Katherine Currie netted seven points and Cindy Peterson finished with eight rebounds.
The Soup A Stars were led by their team captain Lacey Farrar with nine points and five rebounds, while Taylor Jo Quint added eight points and four rebounds. Lacey McQuarrie. battled the boards with a team-high seven rebounds.
