The Scalabrine Squad waited until the last game of the regular season to “make their mark” by defeating the previously prefect record of the Rec Legends, with a final score of 69-62.
The seeding remained the same with the Rec Legends (11-1) dominating as the top seed headed into the postseason tournament. The Squad will try to carry the momentum into the playoffs, as they are matched up against the the No. 2 Swamp Donkeys, (9-3), who are the reigning 2013-14 Men’s League champions.
There were 23 lead changes through the entire game, which was a regular season league record, before the Scalabrine Squad came home with the victory.
Pat Goodall finished the game with 21 points, 15 rebounds and went 7-for-9 from the foul line for the winners. Zach Stubbs, team captain, netted 11 points while Jason Little and Chris Casey chipped in with 10 points each.
Adam Hogan and Matt McCluskey were the scoring leaders for the Rec Legends in their first loss, with 21 and 13 points, respectively. Marcus Crocker posted a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Ron Armstrong added a quiet 10 points.
Postseason playoffs begin
The Houlton Basketball Association began the 2014-15 double elimination postseason tournament by hosting the preliminary game between the No. 4 Sofa Kings and the No. 5 Monstars.
The Monstar team was undermanned with only four or five players. The Sofa Kings won the battle, as they exhausted the efforts of the Monstars.
Seth Dorr secured his first double-double on the season, ending just shy of a triple-double with 23 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists, and three steals for the Sofa Kings. Jeremy Tarr and Chad Duff each added 10 points in the win.
Matt Drake led the Monstars with an explosive 22 points and 14 rebounds, while hitting a game high six 3-pointers. Ruben Redman had another solid game with 14 points and 11 rebounds and Jeff Dustin rounded out the scoring for the Monstars with 13 points.
