News from Monticello — The Nasons expect to have all their logs landed at the river about Tuesday, but the hardwood concern at Harveys will require two or three weeks more. A small blaze was discovered in the blacksmith shop occupied by Walter London on Friday but was soon put out.
Runaway horse on ‘wild dash’ — Mr. Thos. McIntyre, foreman of Houlton Water Co., narrowly escaped serious injury when, while harnessing his horse in the town yard, it became frightened and dragged him for some distance. Getting away, it started on a wild dash down Bangor St. as far as Cary’s Mill. Pung and harness were badly dilapidated, but no injury to the horse.

Benn heads Masons — Oscar P. Benn became the Worshipful Master of Monument Lodge, No. 96 F. & A. M. on Wednesday night at the annual election and installation of officers held in Masonic Hall.
Potato diseases cause concern — Take no chances in selecting seed potatoes this year. Two serious diseases face the industry — ring-rot or bacterial wilt, and leaf-roll, the cause of net necrosis.
Winter rallies draw Scouts — Six hundred and ninety-one Boy Scouts have taken part in six sectional winter rallies held in the Aroostook District of Katahdin Council. At each, the scouts competed in the following: knot tying, compass relay, Morse signaling, fire building, burn the string and various games.

Bridgewater Baptist centennial — There was a meeting Monday night of the (Bridgewater) Baptist Church committee to discuss plans for the celebration of the one hundredth anniversary of founding of the church. In 1865, the church body first met to form a church in a schoolhouse at the foot of Bunker Hill.

FAREWELL PARTY — Don Ladd and his family were honored at a farewell dinner at the Northland Hotel by his fellow employees at Sportwelt Shoe Company. He had been foreman at the plant since it opened for business in the late 1950s. He was transferring to Livermore Falls to accept a similar position. In the photo are, from left, his son and daughter-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Ladd, his son Arnold, Merland Carson, who would succeed Ladd, Mr. Ladd, his daughter Nancy, and Mrs. Ladd.
‘Mikado’ perfomed — The Houlton Community Chorus, under the direction of Paul Paige, will present the Gilbert and Sullival operetta, “The Mikado.” It has been 20 years since it was performed on a Houlton stage.

Three buildings added to National Register — Three southern Aroostook buildings have been entered into the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Walter P. Mansur house (now known as St. Mary’s School), the Aroostook County Courthouse and Jail and the Bridgewater Town Hall and Jail.
Island Falls cookout feeds 1,000 — It is estimated there were 1,400 – 1,500 snowmobiles and 984 people at Mud Pond for the Log Drivers’ Cookout where crews arrived early to get fires built and blazing to keep the bean hole beans warm, brew the coffee, bake biscuits in the reflector oven and fry donuts made on the spot.
