Island Falls Happenings

On March 8, Lee Ann Betz was installed as minister of the Whittier Congregational Church, at 2:30 p.m. Taking part in the installation were representatives from the Katahdin Association, Michael Robinson, Pastor of Lincoln Congregational Church, and John Stevens, lay pastor of  the Island Falls congregational church. Members of the Houlton church choir, along with the choir from Island Falls, supplied the musical portion of the ceremony.

Following the installation a delicious dinner was served to the large group who attended the ceremony.    March 21 was the day that the King-Mitchell Post 7529 served a delicious roast beef and roast pork dinner prepared by Post commander, Grey Hawk, and his two assistants, Cathy and Lillibet. These ladies helped to serve the many who attended by passing out the assortments of vegetables, homemade desserts and, of course, tea and coffee and the famous roast beef and pork.
I haven’t been around the area for the past two weeks, but did hear that Peter Connelly had flown up from Florida to spend a few days here checking the work that had been done on his home and also, checking out the River Cafe, which has been open since last May and is now the only restaurant in our small town.
Since my arrival back in Island Falls have been back to feeding the birds and giving Roger (Webb) friend and neighbor, a rest from trotting across the street to fill my feeders. I now have a suet feeder so won’t have to mix any more peanut butter and lard and I think the birds have finally gotten to like the suet I put out for them. I used the berry suet and saw two or three chickadees hanging on it the other day. The nuthatches are not so fast in getting into the suet so I had a bit of my own mixture in the fridge, so I took it out and used it up on two branches. I hope that will satisfy them.
The second night I was back had two deer appear out back so I immediately threw out some cut-up apples and some old bread, which had disappeared by morning. The have been back every night now. I had a friend (former resident of Island Falls) who called the other day to ask where my I. F. news was! I explained the circumstances and told her that I would try and get back as soon as possible. I am very glad that someone who now lives away likes to read about her hometown.
