On Saturday, May 9, a garage sale was held at the Island Falls Municipal building from 9.00 a.m. until 5.p.m. This was sponsored by the Island Falls Recreation Department, headed by Ruth Frazier. There were tables filled with just about everything and business was quite brisk during the day. The weather cooperated and no rain fell until later.
King-Mitchell Post #7529 will be serving another dinner on May 16th with Chef Grey Hawk doing the honors and he will be baking a delicious baked chicken meal, along with all the fixings, which hopefully, will include a lot of stuffing, and plenty of homemade desserts, with coffee, tea and punch. This will be served from 5:30 until 7, so gather up the family and come enjoy another great meal.
I returned home May 2 after a two month stay in Bangor and while there underwent surgery, was in the hospital only two days and recuperated at son Tom’s home in Glenburn. My apologies to all the faithful readers of my little column — I didn’t realize that so many of you really looked forward to my bits of news and also stories of my birds and deer, and will continue to do my best.
Since I have been back for a week now I have had four deer arriving just about every day, but it has been so dry there is not much green stuff for them to graze on, although it did rain Saturday night. On Sunday, the 10th, there were four of the scroungiest looking deer grazing in my backyard, practically under my picture window. They didn’t look too fat and their fur looked as if it was molting, with white patches showing along their ribs and hindquarters. They stayed quite awhile, then something spooked them and they took off.
I have great flocks of yellow finch, purple finch and many varieties of swallows now, plus a couple of blue jays and an occasional woodpecker that are really enjoying all the sunflower seeds that were left.
My good friend and neighbor, Roger, fed the birds during my absence and even put a new string on a feeder that had fallen.
Unfortunately, the gray squirrel is still around and I spied a red one the other day — don’t put many seeds out now for them to get at.
