East Grand Outdoor Education student Austin St. Pierre teamed with veteran OE student John Massey at Carrot Rapids on the Machias River.
Massey of Danforth took part in the Machias River Canoe Race as an East Grand outdoor education student his sophomore year in 2009 and didn’t have the best experience, upsetting his canoe on Carrot Rapids resulting in not finishing the race.
This time around, he completed the race with OE student Austin St. Pierre who himself has given back to others recently by mentoring a younger East Grand student in the Houlton and East Grand Adventure Races.
Massey is a student at Stetson University in Florida studying molecular biology and just completed his third year with a 4.0. He desires to become a doctor.
This summer he is working at the East Grand Health Center as part of his summer internship requirements as part of the Bonner Program.
St. Pierre intends on taking a fourth year with the outdoor education program.
