HOULTON, Maine — Three Houlton High School students have been nominated to participate in the Maine Youth Leadership (MYL) seminar at the University of Southern Maine May 28-30.
Each year more than 120 high school sophomores from all parts of the state are invited to participate in the four-day “Motivate ME” seminar. Junior Adam Casillas and sophomores Victoria Holmes and Emma Peterson were each selected from HHS to attend. Casillas also attended the event last year as a sophomore.
This popular and energetic event is designed to recognize and develop personal leadership skills. The seminar is at no cost to students, parents or schools. Maine Youth Leadership covers all expenses, meals and lodging. Students are only responsible for their transportation to and from the seminar.
“These bright young minds begin their experience as a diverse group of strangers, and yet within hours, they become a cohesive group of civic-minded teenagers,” said Sue Pierce, guidance counselor for HHS. “The next days’ activities bring them even closer together to team them up with the practical skills of planning, decision-making, facilitating and reasoning.”
Each fall, notices are sent to all accredited high schools in Maine by email and guidance counselors or principals are asked to nominate a sophomore student for the spring seminar. Each school determines its own selection criteria and process.
