100 Years Ago- June 9, 1915

Merchants on parade — One of the big features of the Fourth of July celebration will be the trades floats. It was unanimously voted that any member of the Houlton Merchants Association who failed to put out a float would be assessed from $2.00 to $5.00.

For sale — One hose reel, one Fire Department hand tub and one six-ton, four-horse road roller. A good bargain will be given purchaser, Town of Houlton.

Thousands witness planes’ crossing — Thousands of war-minded residents of southern Aroostook County saw history made here during the weekend when 33 light Stinson model 105 planes, purchased by the French government, were towed across the international line Tuesday morning in one of the first transfers of its kind under the U. S. neutrality law.

Roller steps on display — George McLean, manager of the new roller skating rink on Mechanic street and speed skating champion, will demonstrate highly polished skating steps to include the: strut, schottische, promenade, chicken scratch, two-step, waltz promenade and waltz.

Ten to Dirigo Boys State — Ten Houlton High School juniors selected to attend Dirigo Boys State at the University of Maine in Orono are: Paul Adams, James Grant, Joseph Grant, Daniel Haney, Andy Hay, Michael Ireland, Christopher Lane, Timothy McCormack, Norman Swales and Robert Williams.
Monticello honors veterans — Monticello, under the direction of Town Manager Merle F. Lowery, recently renovated an honor roll plaque, containing the names of approximately 125 veterans of World Wars I and II. It was set in a large brick form, surrounded by shrubbery, flowers and a memorial wreath.

First Free Fishing Day — Sunday, June 17, has been declared Maine’s first free fishing day by Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Bill Vail. It’s also Father’s Day. In 1989, the Maine Legislature authorized the commissioner to declare two days annually when residents could fish without a license. The second day for 1990 will occur on Sept. 2.
