100 Years Ago- July 7, 1915

Of local interest — F. W. Gibbons Co. are building at Smyrna Mills what will probably be the largest potato house in the county, having a capacity of 20,000 bls. with a concrete foundation. Milk from such a fine herd of cows as Cottle Bros. may be had for seven cents a quart. Too many people are forgetting that the legal rate of speed at which one may drive an automobile in the built-up sections is 15 miles an hour.

Food Stamps come to Houlton — A check for $5,000 from the Town of Houlton is in the mail today for the purchase of orange food stamps as a preliminary step to the beginning of the Federal Food Stamp Plan in this town, the second one established in Maine.
Mars Hill boy heads FFA — At the annual state convention of Future Farmers, Herschel Smith, president of the A. C. I. chapter was elected president of the state association.
50 Years Ago-July 1, 1965

Three families lose homes — A fire that at times nearly raged out of control, destroyed two homes, damaged three other buildings left three families homeless here Thursday afternoon. Fire Chief Bert Wetmore believed a gas leak at the house at 8 River Street was the cause. Estimated damage was set at $16,000.

Marciniak named to All-State softball — Anne Marciniak has recently been named to the All-State second team for class B softball in the Maine Sunday Telegram. She is a 1990 graduate and daughter of Mary Ann and William Marciniak.
Aerial surveillance — Two aircraft of the Maine State Police began this week a two-month long enforcement action aimed at speeders along the state’s interstate highways. By Labor Day, planes will have patrolled I-95 from Kittery to Houlton.
