National park for Maine — The Hon. F. E. Guernsey, in addressing the Maine Sportsmen Assn. at Kineo recently, referred to a national park for Maine. “It is the duty of all of us to use such influence as we may exercise… to secure federal action to create a forest reserve in the heart of the great Maine forest in the Mt. Katahdin region.”
Fender bender — A collision between an auto and a team occurred Saturday evening in Union Square. The damage was slight.

Bridgewater Field Day draws crowd — The first annual Field Day of the Bridgewater Fish and Game Club was held at Whited Lake Friday, with a large crowd attending. Prizes awarded included rifles, fishing baskets and rods, a fog lamp and one-pound tobacco.
For the ladies — Penney’s is offering the following items in their advertisement this week: crepe silk hosiery, 55 cents; slips, 57 cents; women’s rayon panties, 10 cents and cotton anklets, 15 cents per pair.

Howe-Hogan summer wedding — Miss Barbara Eileen Howe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Howe, became the bride of Galen N. Hogan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Justin Hogan, June 25 at the Houlton Methodist Church with Rev. Gordon Buzza officiating.

‘Mary Poppins’ at the Temple — Walt Disney’s musical-fantasy, “Mary Poppins,” starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, opens for a full week at the Temple Theatre on July 21, 1965.
Hodgdon won’t join — Voters in Hodgdon cast an emphatic “No” to the question as to whether or not they should join School Administrative District 29. Hodgdon is the second of six towns to vote with New Limerick voting “Yes.” Still to vote are Amity, Cary, Linneus and Ludlow.

Grant-Burton reunion — A reunion of the Grant and Burton families was held at the Grant camp at Mattawamkeag Lake on July 4. Four generations were represented on each side of the family. Music was presented by Eleanor Grant. This was the first time for all the California members of the family to be together in Maine.
SOS: ‘Save Our Steeple’ — The steeple of the Stetson United Methodist Church no longer spears the sky as travelers return home or visitors crest the hill descending onto Patten. A variety of fundraisers and methods will continue to be used to meet the church finance committee’s goal of $30,000 to replace the steeple which was removed seven months ago because of dry rot.
