Woodie Wheaton Land Trust hosts canoe trip

ORIENT, Maine — The Woodie Wheaton Land Trust hosted a canoe trip July 10 on the scenic Monument Brook. The group left from the Orient border crossing towing double ended canoes and kayaks up through North Lake to Greenleaf Brook where a traditional guide’s lunch was served. This area is an outstanding wildlife habitat. Participants saw a bull moose, as well as many species of birds.

“With its wildlife habitat, recreational attributes, and ability to produce income from timber harvesting, the headwaters forest property is an ideal candidate for conservation ownership and stewardship,” said Mike Saunders, a member of the group. “Monument and its eight headwater brooks are the fertile lifeblood of East Grand and Spednic lakes, the St. Croix river, and ultimately Passamaquoddy Bay.”
