100 Years Ago – August 4, 1915
Aroostook Times
Anna Thompson’s The Kitchen Cupboard — Chicken liver sandwich filling: take the chicken livers, gizzards and hearts that have been boiled tender with the chicken and chop them very fine, add one stalk of celery, one gherkin, a strip of green pepper, three olives and two tablespoonfuls of walnut meats, all chopped fine. Then moisten one package of cream cheese with cream, a tablespoonful of chutney sauce and work all smoothly together, using as much sweet cream as is needed to create a good spreading paste. Lay up the sandwiches on white bread.

75 Years Ago – August 1, 1940
All projects for airport are approved — Town manager Brackett announced that all projects in connection with the enlargement and expansion of the Houlton airport have been approved and the money allocated. Approval has come from the Civil Aeronautics Authority, from the United States Army, and from WPA.
Two large donations from Elks and St. Mary’s — Two splendid donations have been recently made to the Red Cross Relief Fund. St. Mary’s Parish donated $61.48, and the Elk’s Charity Fund Committee donated $200.
50 Years Ago – July 29, 1965
Monticello’s summer program under Jay Brewer — This well-built man shakes the water off his glasses and starts explaining the first swimming program that Monticello has had in memory. 84 kids from 7-15 years old have been recruited. He also points out that four teams of Little League were organized, along with three teams of women’s softball, boy’s baseball, and girl’s softball.

Cemetery addition approved — Town Council Monday night approved an addition to Evergreen Cemetery. Willard A. Putnam presented the council with a plan to divide a piece of his land on the west end of the cemetery into 32 family lots. Council agreed with the reservation that it meet with the approval of its attorney, Albert P. Putnam.
25 Years Ago – August 1, 1990
DEP tells Houlton to clean up landfill or face penalties — The specific major violations are: open burning, lack of required daily cover over wastes, and co-disposal of bulky wastes mixing garbage and rubbish.
At the theaters — Playing this week at Temple are “Back to the Future III” starring Michael J. Fox, Dick Tracy with special added attraction “Rollercoaster Rabbit”, “Total Recall” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and “Days of Thunder” starring Tom Cruise.
