To the editor:
As a registered voter, a resident of Ludlow for 40 years, and a huge animal advocate, I am deeply disappointed that our town has voted to no longer contract with the Houlton Humane Society but with the Lincoln shelter. At the annual town meeting on July 27, a very small percent of our town was present and voted for this change, which affects the entire population and the animals that reside here.
In making this decision, there are things to consider besides the cost of the contract. We need to make sure we are taking better care of the animals in our town. An hour ride for a sick or injured animal could mean the difference between life and death. Many lost animals picked up by the animal control officer (ACO) may never be returned to the owner. By the time the owner finds their lost pet is at a shelter in Lincoln, it may be adopted or, worse, euthanized. The distance traveled will be costly and inconvenient for the ACO, Ludlow residents and the town.
Let’s not send our animals out of the county. Let’s find a way to support a local business, our local animal shelter. Isn’t that what small town life is about? A couple of bake sales, a community supper, a raffle could all help support the contract to the shelter.
There will be a selectmen’s meeting at the Ludlow Town Hall on Aug. 12 at 6:30. Concerned Ludlow residents, please come to discuss alternative and positive solutions. Let’s find a way to continue our contract with the Houlton Humane Society.
