HOULTON — Deanna Boisvert, like many others in her profession, always dreamed of one day owning her own hair salon. So when an opportunity arose for her to branch out on her own, she jumped at the chance.

Boisvert opened Divine Family Hair Studio on 7 Broadway July 1 and has seen brisk business. She offers a full salon experience for men, women and children, featuring everything from haircuts, perms, colors, as well as eyebrow sculpting and facial waxing.
Prior to branching out, Boisvert spent six years at Modern Beauty Salon. Leaving that shop was not an easy decision for her, because of the many friendships she had developed over the years.
“The hardest part was leaving my friends at Modern Beauty,” she said. “But this opportunity came about very quickly. Opening my own place was always a long-term goal. It wasn’t planned to happen when it did, but when the opportunity presented itself, it just felt right.”
A native of Old Town, Boisvert went to Pierre’s Cosmetology school in Bangor straight out of high school and was working in Bangor when she met Adam, the man who would become her husband, through mutual friends.
“I was only about a year into my career, so I decided to move to Houlton,” she explained. “Adam was fresh out of the Army and wanted to be in his hometown.”

BU CLR Divine dc2 pt 31TASTEFUL DECOR — The interior of Divine Family Hair Studio on 7 Broadway has been remodeled with a pleasant hardwood floor and new colors.

Owning her own business is not all that different from working at her previous salon, she said. Most hair stylists rent space from a salon and are free to work the hours they choose. The only difference now, Boisvert said, is that she is paying to rent an entire storefront and pay utilities instead of just renting chair space.
Her location, which is directly across the street from Cary Library, has served as either a hair salon or barbershop for decades. She hopes that familiarity will lead new customers to her business. In keeping with the history of the location, an original barber chair from when it was known as Dwyer’s Barber Shop sits in one corner of the salon.
The interior was redecorated by Boisvert and members of her family and includes tasteful hardwood flooring and a peaceful pale blue color on the walls. She also has space to bring in another stylist, which is something she hopes to do in the future.
“I love everything about doing hair,” she said. “You have the ability to be creative. When it comes to hair I really enjoy transforming a person.”
Her sister, Cassie Mayo of Bangor designed the company logo for her new business. Boisvert offers a 15 percent military and law enforcement discount and sells Matrix products. Her salon is open Mondays to Fridays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome. For more information, visit Divine Family Hair Studio on Facebook or call 538-2292.
