Barbara McGillicuddy Bolton will be reading from her novel Lulu Goes to College at Cary Library on Monday, Aug. 10, at 5:30 in the evening. Born and raised in Houlton, Bolton graduated from Colby College in 1965. The novel is based on her freshman year. In the fall of 1961,
the protagonist Lulu Delaney leaves her hometown of Meduxnekeag in Aroostook County to attend Lovejoy, a small liberal arts coed college in Central Maine. Eager to broaden herself, she is wary of losing her hometown values. Although there are premonitions of what is to come, 1961 was more like the 1950’s than what has come to be known as “The 60’s.” Now, more than half a century later, that period of in loco parentis, curfews, panty raids, and formal Sunday dinners is a veritable time capsule. Readers, depending on their ages and life experiences, will find the novel either a mirror or a window to a time gone by.
