HOULTON – Charles R. Smith, 89, went to be with his Lord and Savior August 2, 2015, at his residence surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with colon cancer. He was born May 6, 1926, in Howe Brook, the son of Frank L. and Clara Smith.
Charles served as a Merchant Marine for two years during World War II. He was an engineer on the B & A Railroad for many years, retiring at the age of 62. Charles was a lifelong farmer, continuing to grow and sell vegetables at the Smith’s Vegetable Stand for many, many years. Everyone looked for the big black bear on the North Road and a bag of new potatoes. Charles loved to go fishing. He was a man of faith and knew that Jesus Christ was his Lord and Savior.
Charles is survived by his wife of 65 years, Aileen D. (Graham) Smith of Houlton; six children, John Smith and his wife, Deb, Charlene Rich and her husband, Jim, all of Bangor, Teri-Ann Miller and her husband, Dana, of Ludlow, Stephen Smith and his wife, Kathy, of Wittman, AZ, Kevin Smith and his significant other, Heidi Nelson, Gregory Smith and his wife, Dorothy, all of Houlton; eight grandchildren, Maegan Smith Kilcollins, Tracey Bradbury, Shanna Dean, Suzanna Smith, Oliney Smith (Buddy), Grace Kemp, April Smith and Heather Smith; great-grandchild, Gabby Smith; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brothers, Franklin Smith, Philip Smith and George Smith; sisters, Geneva Bodge, Connie Bither and Gladys Hultman.
The family would like to thank Dr. Sussman, Dr. Abouleish and Dr. Sood, the staff of Hospice of Aroostook and Rev. Victor Han for their care and support through Charles’ illness.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12 at Dunn Funeral Home with Rev. Victor Han officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.
