Island Falls Notes

The Whittier Congregational Church had a very successful trash and treasure sale on July 25 and many people went home happy with the “treasures” they found. The home baked goods table was soon out of all the mouth- watering goodies that were available and the homemade strawberry ice cream was enjoyed by many. The ladies of the church worked hard to make the sale a success and it paid off, thanks to their hard work.

Joyce and Diane Curry have arrived from their home in Portland to spend about 10 days in the area while staying at the Curry homestead here in Island falls. They plan to do a lot of visiting with relatives and friends and to also enjoy the Summerfest activities; all in all, a very good time because it’s fun to see old friends and talk over old times.

I still have seen no deer in my spacious backyard, but did see one the other day on my daily trip to go for a swim at the pool at Vacationland Estates. I saw a couple of mourning doves out on my front lawn the other day and the little hummingbirds are arriving several times a day to get their fill. I finally got my big lawn mowed between rain showers and the crows still arrive shortly after to find any goodies they can for their supper.

Former residents who returned to Island Falls to enjoy the Summerfest activities have been Mr. and Mrs Charles Pelkey, who arrived from their home in North Carolina, and Gary Springer, who now hails from Miles, Texas. Gary also spent some time with his mother, “Tat” Springer at Madigan Estates, and getting in some fishing trips. All came to attend the alumni banquet, where they became re-acquainted with old friends and enjoyed the good food cooked for them by the Island Falls Snowmobile Club.

Also here to enjoy the SummerFest activities have been Joyce and Diane Curry, brother Philip and wife, Polly. All stayed at the Curry homestead while here and they did a lot of visiting with friends and family members during the week.

The highlight of the week was the parade on Sunday, and as Diane was a member of the 50th IFHS reunion, she was glad to ride in the parade with fellow 50th classmate Brenda Willette. They all agreed that the town “worker bees” should be commended for making the Summerfest such a pleasant time for all to enjoy.

Winners in the 4K walk during the Summerfest were Alan Chamberlain, son of Alice (Donham)) and Chester Chamberlain, from West Point, Va., and in second place, Heather Newman, daughter of the late Dr. Cal Newman Gail (Webb) Davis (daughter of Bucky and Gertie Webb). She hails from Columbia, South Carolina.

Arnold Roach recently enjoyed his 86th birthday at his camp on Pleasant Pond. A group of friends arrived about 2 p.m. bearing gifts , and the gift that was the highlight of the occasion was a box of wonderful doughnuts bought at Sadie’s Bakery in Houlton by a longtime friend, Gene, who knew Arnold was very fond of these special doughnuts (any flavor). Betty Bishop, longtime friend, made the birthday cakes for this occasion, and all enjoyed the afternoon party , but Arnold didn’t pass out any of the much-prized doughnuts!

I still have my hummingbirds flitting about my feeder and had to refill it the other day. Now have had a couple of the big black crows in my backyard, but no other wildlife has been spotted. I did have a young deer dart across the road in front of me the other day when I was on my way to the pool at Vacationland Estates. Fortunately, I was not going too fast and I missed him, but it was close

I have seen a few new skunk holes while mowing, but not as bad as last year.
