100 Years Ago – September 8, 1915
Trunk Line Fences — At a recent meeting of the state highway commission, their attention was called to the fact that guard rail fences along the state highways are being used by advertisers for the purpose of tacking and painting signs. The policy of the highway commission is for clean road sides. In one instance, 653 separate signs were removed from 1300 lineal feet of guard rail.

Madigan Lawn Party — In order to reduce a debt of $31,000 on the Madigan Hospital, the Sisters have arranged for a lawn party on the beautiful grounds of the institution on Monday, Sept. 18. For such a deserving cause, a large number should and doubtless will attend.
75 Years Ago – September 5, 1940
Sales of beverages — Voters! It is now possible for you to choose how YOU would like to have malt beverages (beer and ale) sold in your town. By action of the last legislature this referendum question has been divided into two parts. First: Shall malt beverages be sold to be consumed on the premises or second; shall malt beverages be sold NOT to be consumed on the premises. You may vote yes on both or either of these propositions. Vote on referendum question four and you vote ONLY that beer may be sold to take home and NOT be consumed on the premises where it is sold. This is the method the majority of people approve. Help your merchant and you help your town. Help the Aged and the National Defense Program through the additional tax income earned by the legalized sale of beer in Houlton.
50 Years Ago – September 2, 1965
Sugar Beet Mill Dinner — Almost 2,ooo people were in Easton Friday night for dinner and speaking program marking formal recognition of the construction of Maine Sugar Industries’ $14.7 sugar beet processing plant.
15.7 Per Cent in County Are Self-Employed — The spirit of individual enterprise and adventure shines bright in Aroostook County, judging from the number of local residence who have taken the financial plunge and gone into business for themselves. According to the latest government tabulations there are 4,352 local residents who make their living from their own businesses or professions.
25 Years Ago – September 5, 1990
Houlton population down — Preliminary U.S. census figures for Houlton indicate the Shiretown’s population fell by 164 people from 1980 to 1990, but Town Manager P. Lewis Bone isn’t buying it. “Given the slow but steady growth we’ve experienced over the past several years, I can’t believe our population hasn’t grown too.” The April 1, 1980 count held Houlton’s population to be 6,766.

BS FromFiles dc pt 35CITIZENSHIP AWARDS — Christopher Bean and Corrine Lynds were presented with the American Legion Citizenship Awards during the annual Junior High School Awards Assembly. The presentations were made by George Stevens on behalf of the Chester L. Briggs Post 47.

Island Falls news — Clayton and Charlene Webb hosted their annual cookout for neighborhood children. After the cookout, games were held and everyone joined in to play leapfrog. A birthday party was held at Hook Point Camps honoring David D. Sewall, grandson of William and Cleo Sewall.
