Girls soccer squads from Hodgdon, Southern Aroostook, Katahdin and East Grand continue to make progress on the pitch as the season nears the midway mark. Southern Aroostook and East Grand both got their first wins of the season this past week. SACS got its first victory Monday afternoon by knocking off previously unbeaten Hodgdon, while East Grand bested Woodland Sept. 17.
As of Tuesday morning, Southern Aroostook (1-3-1, 8.2398 Heal Points), by virtue of beating Hodgdon, moved up to the No. 7 seed in the Maine Principals’ Association Class D North Heal Points Standings. Hodgdon (4-1, 5.9184) was ninth in the region, while Katahdin (1-3, 2.6020) was 12th and East Grand (1-5, 0.7143) was 14th.
The top 12 squads in this region make the playoffs, so for the time being Southern Aroostook, Hodgdon and Katahdin are all in the postseason picture.
The following is a recap of other games played through Monday, Sept. 21.
Hodgdon 8, East Grand 0 — At Danforth Sept. 16, junior Jill Gough had four goals and an assist to lead the Hawks to the victory. Hodgdon’s Jessica Drew stopped all 14 shots she faced.
Bethany Lindsey stopped 24 shots for East Grand.
Easton 3, Katahdin 1 — At Easton Sept. 16 eighth-grader Lydia Ferris opened the scoring for the Bears with the game’s only goal in the first half at the 26:58 mark en route to the win over Kathadin of Stacyville.
Sophie Vetter scored at 27:56 in the second half, to tie it for the Cougars. Abbie Currier gave Easton a 2-1 lead with 25:25 left in the game. Delia Bonner scored the final goal with 13:30 left on an assist by Isabelle Morin to seal the win. Easton’s Blake Bradley made 14 saves on 26 shots. Katahdin’s Courtney Stevens had eight saves on 20 shots.
East Grand 7, Woodland 4 — At Woodland Sept. 17, East Grand notched its first win of the season as the Vikings exploded for seven goals.
“The Lady Vikings offense finally got clicking five games into the season, behind freshman Jennifer Crone’s three goals and one assist,” said coach Chris Young. “It felt nice to finally have our offense kick in. We knew it would take a while for the young players at front to get up to varsity speed.”
Midfielder Haleigh Shay added two goals for East Grand. Jenny Cox scored three of the four goals for Woodland.
Schenck 3, Katahdin 1 — At Stacyville Friday, Emma Alley scored a goal in each half to lead Schenck to victory over the Cougars. Schenck (3-2) got off to a quick start with Cayleigh Bernier scoring 42 seconds into the game on an assist by Samantha Falone.
Sophie Vetter scored off of a penalty kick three minutes into the second half for 1-3 Katahdin’s lone goal. Schenck goalie Allison Noddin made 14 saves saves off 16 shots. Katahdin’s Courtney Stevens had 11 saves off 13 shots.
East Grand 0, Shead 3 — At Danforth Saturday, the Shead Tigers notched the shutout victory. Individual results were not reported.
Hodgdon 2, Southern Aroostook 3 — At Hodgdon Monday, Makaelyn Porter, Lily Leavitt and Kassidy Mathers each scored a goal to give the Warriors their first win. Jill Gough paced Hodgdon with a goal and an assist, while Taylor Desrosier added a goal.
“It was definitely a huge win for us,” SACS coach Holly Vining said. “We had set a goal for ourselves of hopefully making a prelim. If we don’t win some games against teams that have won some games, that (playoffs) won’t be a possibility. Plus, it was nice to see smiles for a change.”
The win was doubly-sweet for the Warriors as they had a number of players in different positions and were relying on four freshmen and four eighth-graders, Vining said.
