The Shiretowners outscored their three opponents by a 25-2 margin in girls’ soccer action last week, improving their record to 7-1 in the process. After Monday’s 9-1 home win over Lee Academy, the Shires remained in second place in the Class C North Heal Point standings, behind only undefeated Orono (8-0-1). Hodgdon won two of its three matches and are now 6-2 overall and in eighth place in Class D. Katahdin picked up its first two victories and is 2-5, while Southern Aroostook stands at 1-3-2 and East Grand at 1-5-1 midway through the campaign.
The following is a recap of games played through Monday.
Houlton 4, Fort Kent 0 — At Houlton Sept. 23, a strong second-half carried the Shires to victory over the team that knocked them out of the regional championship a year ago. Fort Kent beat Houlton 1-0 in 2014 for the regional championship on a game decided by penalty kicks.
Natalie Hill netted two goals to propel the Shiretowners to victory over the Warriors. Katie Condon got Houlton on the board at the 4:08 mark of the first half. Hill then followed up with goals at the 1:13 mark of the first half and with 28:36 left to go in the second half. Carolyn Mooers also scored for Houlton.
Houlton’s Emma Hines made one save on three shots. Sylvie Guimond made 16 saves on 26 shot for Fort Kent.
Penobscot Valley 10, Katahdin 0 — At Stacyville Sept. 23, the undefeated Howlers of Howland shut out Katahdin. Leading the charge for Penobscot Valley were Amy Hallet (3 goals); Arianna McKinnon (assist); Ryley Buck (2 goals); Taylore Crawford (goal, assist); Abby Davis (goal); Arianna McKinnon (goal, two assist); Laure Reed (goal); and Taryn Reed (goal).
Katahdin goalie Courtney Stevens made 18 saves for 25 shots and Howler goalie Sami Ireland made four saves for four shots.
Hodgdon 6, Limestone/MSSM 3 — At Limestone Thursday, the Hawks rolled to a 6-3 victory over Limestone/Maine School of Science and Mathematics. Individual game results were not reported to the newspaper.
Southern Aroostook 1, East Grand 1 — At Danforth Thursday, first-half goals scored by Southern Aroostook’s Kassidy Mathers and East Grand’s Haleigh Shay ended the game with a 1-1 tie as the two teams battled through a scoreless second half and two overtimes.
East Grand goalkeeper Bethany Lindsey made 24 saves on 25 shots and Warrior goalie Alexa Merry had 17 saves on 18 shots.
Hodgdon 1, Van Buren 0 — At Hodgdon Friday, Jill Gough netted the only goal of the game as the Hawks blanked the Crusaders.
Sidney Crane had the assist on Gough’s goal.
Houlton 12, Calais 1 — At Calais Saturday, Condon and Hill each registered hat tricks, while Hines and Mia Hanning scored two goals each and Tyra Gentle and Allix Hanson one each in the Shires’ rout of the Blue Devils.
Hines and Hannah Foley combined for the goal-keeping chores and saved four of five shots for Houlton.
Logan Huckins tallied the lone Calais goal.
Katahdin 2, Bangor Christian 1 — At Bangor Saturday, Erin Lake scored 14 minutes into the second half to snap a 1-1 deadlock and pace the Cougars past the winless Patriots.
Kelsey Ham had put Katahdin on top with a first-half goal before BC tied it up on Kelsey DeRoche’s goal three minutes following intermission.
Courtney Stevens collected 14 saves for the Cougars, while Becca Bigot had 11 for Bangor Christian.
Shead 1, Hodgdon 0 — At Eastport Monday, Cierra Seeley scored the game’s only goal at the 26:32 mark of the first half to lift the Tiger girls past Hodgdon.
Samantha Wilder made nine saves for the undefeated Tigers and Jessica Drew made six saves on seven shots for the Hawks, who lost for just the second time this season.
Houlton 9, Lee Academy 1 — At Houlton Monday, Condon scored three times to help propel the Shires to victory over the Pandas. Chelsea Gentle added a goal and two assists, while Hill and Claire Gilpatrick each had a goal and an assist for Houlton. The Shiretowners also got goals from Aspen Flewelling, Tyra Gentle and Chloe Davis.
Hines and Foley combined to make two saves on three shots for the Shiretowners.
Chey Moody scored the goal for Lee Academy. Amber Wilcoxson made 27 saves on 41 shots.
