GHCA squads dominate at County middle school meet

WOODLAND, Maine –– Greater Houlton Christian Academy owned the day at the Aroostook League’s Middle School Cross Country Championships, held Thursday at Woodland Consolidated School.

 The Eagles featured the top two individuals in both the girls’ and boys’ races and also were the team champion for both genders.

In the girls’ competition, Teagan Ewings was the overall winner in 14 minutes and 12.03 seconds out of 42 runners on the 1.9-mile course. She was followed by teammate Mia Henderson, who came in at 14:29.47.

Their GHCA team tucked five runners in the top eight to score a meet low 20 points. Olivia Nadeau (15:21.92) and Emmalyne Drake (15:36.61) were fourth and fifth, respectively, while Ellie Grant (15:48.47) took eighth.

Caribou, which followed with 45 points, was led by Katrina Salch, who placed third in 14:36.59. Vikings Danielle Cyr (sixth, 15:43.52) and Shelby Barnes (10th, 16:07.59) also had solid performances.

Presque Isle scored 67 points to take third in the team standings. For the Wildcats, Delaney Alward took seventh in 15:44 and Juliette Gomez-Lawson was ninth in 16:01.97.

Union 122, with 101 points, came in fourth, with Saffayia Durepo (16:18.03) and MIkaela Spooner (16:24.45) the team’s top runners in 14th and 15th, respectively.

Washburn’s only runner, Kylie Cunningham, placed eighth in 16:10.63.

For the boys, Matthew Crane and Will Austin were at the front of the pack of the 37-runner field. Crane’s time of 13:09.14 gave him the win, while Austin was close behind at 13:11.39.

The Eagles scored 36 points, as Jeremy Stone (sixth, 13:53.22) and Austin Winslow (10th, 14:48.4) also fashioned top-10 efforts.

Caribou was next with 45 points and had three runners in the top 10. Carter Quist was third in 13:18.69, Dakota Yakel fourth in 13:40.7 and Martin Heald ninth in 14:28.61.

For third-place Union 122, with 50 points, John O’Meara was fifth in 13:48.07 and Dylan Dodd placed eighth in 14:27.33.

Ben Ryan led the way for Presque Isle, which scored 90 points to take fourth as a team. Ryan outkicked two competitors at the finish line to take seventh in 14:27.29.
