HAPPY LOSERS
By Shirley Sides
On Sept. 30, the last Wednesday of the month, the weight group called The Happy Losers held their weekly meeting. Jackie Pratt, the leader, opened the meeting welcoming the members followed by the pledge and roll call. Eleven members weighed-in and attended the meeting.
Joan Sides was the person who lost the most weight for the week and Dotty Rand and Loretta Bouchard were runners-up. Great job ladies!
Reports were given by the secretary and treasurer. There was no program for the week as we had breakfast at the Brookside Inn, saying goodbye to Jan Greely as she is returning to Tennessee after spending the summer with us. We will so miss her. Also Jane Fitzgerald has returned to Millinocket.
Please feel welcome to join our group every Wednesday. Weigh-ins are from 8-8:30 a.m. and the meeting usually starts at 8:30 a.m. See you at the United Baptist Church vestry in Island Falls.

The Island Falls annual craft is now being organized under the direction of Ruth Frazier and will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7th at the Island Falls municipal building. Space will be available for those who are interested in having a table.
Despite the bad weather on Wednesday a group of ladies called “The Happy Losers ” drove to the Brookside Inn Restaurant in Smyrna to have a “going away” breakfast for a member who will soon be leaving for her home in Virginia. Those attending were Brenda Raymond, Lois Green, Kay Rideout, Loretta Bouchard, Joannie Sides, Dottie Rand, Jackie Pratt, Shirley Sides, Cecelia Brown, myself and Jan Greeley, who plans to return next year to rejoin the group. Everyone certainly enjoyed having Jan with us for the summer and we look forward to her return.
Now I am seeing plenty of birds at my feeders, especially the chickadees and, now and then, a little swallow will appear. Haven’t seen any blue jays around yet but did have a little red squirrel show up one day. He’s the one who lands on the feeder and knocks it out of kilter so that some of the seeds fall out. I am forever going out to set it to rights again.
The deer have now returned to my spacious back lawn and had six of them there the other evening, peacefully grazing away — the two little ones were having fun playing and frolicking around while the grown-ups ate. Then, just before dusk a car started up next door and that was that — they all flew as quick as a wink into the newest woods and that was it for the day.
Hopefully they will come back another day.
