It is getting down to crunch time for girls’ soccer squads as the regular season rapidly winds to a close.
As of Tuesday morning, Houlton (11-1-1, 112.0408 Heal Points) took over the top seed in Class C North region as Orono (9-1-1, 99.6684 points) dropped to second. The two teams split during the regular season. The Shires have just one game left on the season, on the road against Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln Tuesday, Oct. 20, while Orono has three games remaining on its schedule.
The top five squads earn a bye in Class C.
In Class D North, Southern Aroostook’s strong play of late has seen the Warriors (5-4-2, 44.0561) move up to the No. 6 seed. Hodgdon (8-4, 30.9184) is presently eighth, while Katahdin (3-8-1, 21.7857) was 11th. All three squads are in the playoff mix as the top 12 teams advance, with the top four seeds earning a bye.
East Grand (2-7-2, 9.6684) is 14th and not presently in the playoff mix.
The following is a recap of games played through Monday, Oct. 12.
Hodgdon 1, Southern Aroostook 4 — At Dyer Brook Oct. 6, Kassidy Mathers scored three first-half goals to lead the Warriors past Hodgdon. Kylie Vining added a second-half goal for the Warriors, while Makaelyn Porter chipped in with two assists and Lily Leavitt added one assist.
Taylor Desrosier scored unassisted for the Hawks with 4:11 remaining in the first half.
SACS goalie Alexa Merry had 3 saves on 15 shots while Hodgdon goalie Jessica Drew had 7 saves on 21 shots.
East Grand 2, Katahdin 2 — At Stacyville Oct. 6, Georgia Landry scored for Katahdin with 13:11 left in regulation to tie the game at 2-2 and send it into overtime. Neither team was able to convert multiple scoring chances in OT.
Katahdin took a 1-0 lead on Erin Lake’s goal at 35-41, but the Vikings of Danforth answered with two goals by Haleigh Shay, the first at 12:37 and the second at 8:06.
Courtney Stevens finished with 13 saves on 15 shots for Katahdin, while Bethany Lindsey made 32 saves on 35 shots for East Grand.
Houlton 3, Schenck 0 — At East Millinocket Oct. 6, Natalie Hill scored a goal in each half to lift the Shiretowners by the Wolverines. Mia Hanning chipped in with a first-half goal for Houlton.
Houlton goalie Emma Hines made 10 saves on 12 shots and Schenck goalie Taylor McLaughlin finished with 28 saves on 32 shots.
East Grand 8, Woodland 1 — At Danforth Oct. 7, Kianna Cassie scored three goals and freshman Jennifer Crone notched two goals to lead East Grand over Woodland. Mallory Gilman, Haleigh Shay and Paige Young also had one goal apiece for the Vikings in the high-scoring game.
Anne Johnson scored the goal for Woodland.
East Grand 0, Southern Aroostook 4 — At Dyer Brook Thursday, the Warriors scored two first-half goals and added two insurance goals in the second half to defeat the Vikings. Kylie Vining had two goals, while Kassidy Mathers and Makaelyn Porter each had a goal and an assist. Lily Leavitt also provided an assist.
Alexa Merry had four saves on seven shots for the Warriors. Bethany Lindsey and Mackenzie Rowe combined for 10 saves on 22 shots for the Vikings.
Houlton 6, Fort Kent 1 — At Fort Kent Saturday, Houlton scored three goals in a six-minute span in the first half en route to defeating the Warriors. Tyra Gentle scored twice, while Jamie Brown, Aspen Flewelling, Rebecca Mooers and Hill each added a goal for the Shiretowners.
Lea Pelletier scored for Fort Kent on a Mikayla Pelletier assist.
The Shires’ Hines made four saves on five shots, while the Warriors’ Sylvie Guimond and Morgan Roy combined to stop 16 of 22 shots.
Woodland 2, Southern Aroostook 8 — At Dyer Brook Saturday, Leavitt had three first-half goals and added another in the second half to help lift the Warriors passed Woodland. Kassidy Mathers added three goals and an assist, and Sydney Brewer also scored for the Warriors.
Kasey Grass and Willow Newman each scored for the Dragons.
Marissa Boulier had eight saves on 11 shots for SACS, while Sadie Smith had 12 saves on 30 shots for the winless Dragons.
Houlton 1, Madawaska 1 — At Madawaska Monday, Houlton took an early 1-0 lead in the first half as Claire Gilpatrick scored at the 9:38 mark. In the second half, Madawaska’s Aspen Cote converted a crossing pass from Hannah Nadeau to tie the game with 12:34 remaining.
Neither team was able to break the scoring plane in two overtime periods, resulting in a draw.
Madawaska’s Alexis Levesque made eight saves on 12 shots. Houlton’s Hines had eight saves on 14 shots.
