HOULTON & AMITY — Elaine M. Simpson, 86, passed away October 24, 2015 at Madigan Estates Nursing Home after a lengthy period of declining health. She was born August 22, 1929, in Amity, Maine, the youngest child of Isaac Walton Simpson and Effie Laurina Walton.
Elaine grew up on a farm in Amity where she learned the skills and work ethic that would serve her well throughout her life. At the young age of 12 years – she drove a horse and wagon or sleigh by herself all the way to the Wilcox School in Cary each day rain or shine. As an adult, she was comfortable driving a plow truck, doing carpentry, or making pickles from her garden cucumbers. She attended schools in Amity, Cary, Houlton, and graduated from Gardiner High School in 1949. For the next 25 years, she worked at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft as a personal secretary to the Chief Mechanic of the Southington, Connecticut Plant. After retiring, she returned to Houlton, Maine.
During her life in Houlton, she bought a home, and renovated it into apartments. She also took a CNA course and worked for many families in the area. She had a special gift for working with the elderly. She was a very thoughtful and compassionate person – always remembering everyone’s birthday with a special card or gift. Elaine was generous to a fault – giving away most of what she bought to others.
Aside from her parents, Elaine was predeceased by her six brothers: Millard, Sterle, Fred, Hollis, Gerald, and Earl, and four sisters: Evelyn Curtis, Rose Collins, Ellen Thompson, and Olive Thompson. She is survived by sisters Athlyn Titcomb of Houlton, Maine, and Lily McQuarrie of Colchester, Connecticut.
Elaine loved her family and her acts of kindness will be fondly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews and their families – especially by two nieces, Ellen Askren and Laurine Wilson, who did much to help her in her final years. The family wishes to thank both Dr Sussman and the staff at Madigan Estates Nursing home for their care and concern over the years.
Graveside service will be held at the North Amity Cemetery at noon on Friday, Oct. 30, 2015 with Rev. Ginny Urbanek officiating. A service of Dunn Funeral Home. Online condolences and guest book: dunnfuneral.com
