Owls compete in roller ski event

The University of Maine Presque Isle ski team competed in the annual Lobster Roll held on North Haven Island Nov. 8, 2015. The preseason race, which utilizes roller skis, was also attended by Maine’s other collegiate ski teams — Bates, Bowdoin and Colby, as well as the Maine Winter Sports Center squad.

The event although quite low key is always an excellent opportunity for the team to get in their first traveling opportunity and to meet members of opposing teams.

On the men’s side, freshmen Matt Forshey of Scotia, N.Y. and Connor Hrynuk of Boonville, N.Y. put in excellent efforts despite traveling and competing in Lakeland, Fla. two days prior in the USCAA National Cross-Country Meet. Ian Marshall, another freshman from Saco, competing in his first 15K roller ski race continues to make leaps and bounds in training and has proven to be a fierce competitor. Hrynuk paced the Owls with a time of 44:04.4.

On the women’s side, Valentina Annunziata, a sophomore from Honeoyo Falls, N.Y., Hilary Saucy, a senior from Harleysville, Pa., and Lydia Streinz, a junior from Hersey, all returners for the fighting Owls, had excellent showings. Streinz’s time of 45:09.2 was 1/10th of a second off the lead, putting her in second place to lead the Owls.
