Houlton Star Bright Children’s Theatre is seeking a director for this year’s production, scheduled to be performed in early spring, 2016, by children third through fifth grade.
Responsibilities include helping to select the play to be performed; making casting choices; running after-school rehearsals, usually twice a week through the winter months; and overseeing production decisions. HSBCT has an active board of directors willing to provide help and support in all areas, and has a modest budget for expenses.
This is a volunteer position, and no formal theatre training or education is necessary. The rewards are great, as the director has the opportunity to work with motivated, creative children, as well as with adults committed to children’s growth in theatre skills and confidence.
Plays usually draw children from throughout the greater Houlton area, and have received much community support. Performances take place at the Houlton Performing Arts Center, Houlton Middle School/High School.
HSBCT is a long-running organization, begun at Ricker College in 1968, with the goal of producing plays “for children, by children.” Performances in recent years have included comedies, musicals, dramas, plays based on traditional stories and children’s literature, and plays written by children.
Plans are underway for a radio production by children sixth through eighth grade; more information for the younger children’s play will be forthcoming. Persons interested in the director’s position may contact Barbara Hogan, HSBCT board president, at behh@hogansystems.net, or 532-2901.
