Local soccer players honored with Butch Shaw Awards

Every year, the Northern Maine Board of Approved Soccer Officials presents the Butch Shaw Award to the top soccer player in Aroostook County in classes B, C and D who also exemplifies the characteristics of respect and sportsmanship.

Shaw, a Mars Hill native, became a member of the NMBASO in 1972, making him one of the first officials in the region. He was also a well known basketball and baseball coach at Presque Isle High School and was known for his motto “Hustle, Pride, Defense.” Shaw was diagnosed with leukemia in July of 1985 and he passed away in October of that year.

This year’s recipients are: Class B boys, Michael Hunter, Caribou; Class C boys, Brandon Theriault, Fort Kent; Class D boys, Jarrett Beaulier, Ashland; and Chris Giberson, Fort Fairfield; Class B girls, Maddie Doucette, Caribou; and Jillian Flynn, Presque Isle; Class C girls, Natalie Hill, Houlton; and Class D girls, Caitlin Paradis, Ashland; and Hannah Nadeau, Madawaska.
