The University of Maine Intensive English Institute (UMaine IEI) announces the launch of its College Prep Program. The three-week course is for non-native English-speaking high-school students currently studying in the United States.

Regardless of where students have decided to attend college, the program is designed to give them an opportunity to prepare for higher education by developing academic skills in a university setting. Participants will live on the University of Maine campus in Orono, while taking classes at the IEI. Students will have the opportunity to meet UMaine students and professors, visit departments, campus laboratories and other UMaine facilities.

College prep students will join current IEI students in weekly activities, from shopping and sightseeing to hiking and camping.

“Activities are an important part of all IEI programs,” said Program Coordinator Rebecca Rand. “They give the students the chance to connect with each other and to experience Maine. Since the IEI has many students from all over the world, it is truly a multicultural and rich environment for student learning and successful preparation for University or college life.”

Some topics covered will include time management, plagiarism, study practices and academic reading and writing. Students will learn about the culture of an American university.

The program will run from June 13-July 1. Students can apply online at www.umaine.edu/iei/collegeprep.
