HOULTON —David George Wittner, 85, passed away November 16, 2015, at his residence. He was born January 26, 1930, in Parks, Nebraska, the son of Charles Homer and Martha Mae (Gilbert) Wittner.
David graduated from Emmett High School in 1947 and enlisted in the U.S. Army. After being assigned to Japan, he graduated officer candidate school in July 1952 and afterward served in the Korean War. Other assignments included Cyprus, Libya, Germany and England. He spent the latter part of his military career specializing in cryptology and linguistics and retired in 1967. After a previous marriage to Diane Heaton ended in divorce in 1960, he married Gracie Ann Cook until he was widowed in 1980. He married Elaine Bartley in 1981 and after retiring in the early 1990′,s they enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and to many countries throughout Europe. During his time in Maine, he worked as town manager for the towns of Monticello, Hodgdon and Linneus and as the director for the Southern Aroostook Solid Waste Management District.
David is survived by his wife, Elaine (Bartley) Wittner of Houlton; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Kathleen Wittner of Clinton, UT; stepson, Sam Jorgensen of AL; stepdaughters, Denise Lugo of Enterprise, AL, and Vicki Delong of Presque Isle; three grandsons; two granddaughters; several great-grandchildren; his brother, Vernon G. Wittner of Albuquerque, NM; sister-in-law, Bonnie Wittner of Boise, ID; brother and sister-in-laws, Bruce and Colleen Anderson of Littleton, Marie and Galen Case of Mars Hill. He was predeceased by his brothers, Edwin and Charles.
At David’s request, there will not be a viewing or funeral service but he wished for everyone to celebrate his life and accomplishments.
