100 Years Ago – Nov. 24, 1915

 

    New highway — The new concrete state highway between Portland and Dunstan, Scarboro, was officially opened last week when Gov. Oakley C. Curtis and the members of this Council rode over and inspected  it.

 

    Opera House Griffith’s big picture “The Birth of a Nation” will come to the Opera House Dec. 29-30-31. There will be a big orchestra of ten pieces, and a chorus behind the scenes, while several very beautiful girls will act as ushers, to furnish local color, etc. Patrons are warned to secure their seat reservations at the earliest possible moment for the attendance at the Opera House will positively be greater than this town has ever known before, either for a production of the spoken stage or the silent drama.

 

75 Years Ago – Nov. 21, 1940

 

    Praising old Maine women Many of the divorces of today might be averted if modern women copied the virtues of their forebears.  Many women of today do not look upon the job of housekeeping as a job. “They depend more upon the can opener than the stove; they drive automobiles instead of using the sewing machine.”

 

    Tooth care To keep teeth in the best possible condition one should drink a quart of milk daily, eat generously of fresh vegetables and fruits; have at each meal one food which requires hard chewing; have the teeth examined and all necessary dental work done on them once a year.

 

50 Years Ago – Nov. 25, 1965

 

    Coin switch Nothing up the sleeves. It’s just a coin trick, trading new coins for old. By means of abracadabra, Uncle Sam is about to extract some $1,035,570 from the pockets of Aroostook County residents and they won’t feel a thing. Very soon now the Treasury Department will be flooding the country with new-style coins containing little or no silver.

 

    Sale at Sampson’s Sugar – 5 lb bag for 49c. Potatoes – 50 lb bag for $1.29. Onions – 10 lb bag for 39c.  Hamburg – 3 lbs 99c.

 

25 Years Ago – Nov.  21, 1990

 

    Storm Electrical service in southern Aroostook was nearly back to normal Tuesday after Monday’s ice storm put the crews on a hectic pace. Houlton’s Public Works Department, meanwhile was mapping plans to pick up the trees and limbs littering roadsides in the frozen downpour’s aftermath.

 

    Cummings breaks record Terry Cummings, a senior from Houlton, broke the UM Presque Isle individual scoring record eight minutes into the consolation game against UM Fort Kent on Thursday evening in the Star City Shoot-Out. Cummings sank his second three-pointer of the night to break the old record of 1,672 and ended the evening at 1,680 career points.
