Island Falls Notes

On Nov. 21, the Island Falls VFW held its annual turkey raffle at the post home.

There was a delicious dinner of roast pork and beef, prepared by chef Grey Hawk and assisted by Mariette and Cathy. The raffle was held following dinner and there were a great many there to try and win one of the 30 turkeys, so the bidding was fast and furious and all the turkeys were raffled off in no time.

Marion Hoar, John Stevens, Barbara Pelletier and Riva were volunteers at the Upper Room in Sherman on Nov. 21 and were very, very busy the entire time they were there. Despite the chilly weather, many arrived during the day and lots of good warm clothing was bought for the coming winter plus some Christmas decorations, and there were some toys that were taken also by some of the younger buyers.

We haven’t had much winter so far, but I am still patiently throwing out the old bread and cut-up apples for the deer and they keep on arriving faithfully and eating them all up. I never get a chance to see them now as they seem to arrive when it is too dark. Once in awhile, when I look out back, I will see a deer down by the edge of the woods, but they don’t seem to come any closer.

I am still enjoying watching the cardinals, and the female is there every morning early to get her fill before the pesky gray squirrels come and scare them away. I am now putting out my mixture of peanut butter and lard on the branches of my cedar tree and the woodpeckers are very happy about this, and also the blue jays, so it doesn’t stay on the branches too long.

I think Fred Anderson’s pretty coon cat has been a visitor in my barn, as the hood on my car has now many cat paw marks on it, but this I don’t mind as she keeps me mouse-free.
