AMITY, Maine — A 41-year-old local woman escaped serious injuries Dec. 1, 2015 after swerving to avoid three deer in the roadway and crashing into the woods in this southern Aroostook community.
Monica Jones was northbound on U.S. Route 1 in her 2007 Dodge pickup when she encountered the animals just after 10 a.m., according to Maine State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Clark.
Jones swerved to miss the deer, lost control of her pickup and drove off the roadway, striking several trees.
First-responders from the Houlton Fire and Ambulance Department initially had difficulty locating the scene of the accident, as there were trees covering the truck, Clark said in a press release about the accident.
Jones was taken by Houlton Ambulance to Houlton Regional Hospital to be treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, the sergeant reported. She was wearing a seat belt.
The vehicle was destroyed, Clark said.
