SACS girls suffer first loss of the year

The Houlton girls basketball team remains undefeated four games into the regular season. The Shires (4-0, 7.0370 Heal Points) are the top-ranked team in the Class B North region according to the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Points Standings.

In Class C North, Hodgdon (0-3, no points) has played competitively, but the Hawks are still searching for their first win.

In Class D North, Southern Aroostook suffered its first loss of the year Friday against a tough Fort Fairfield squad. The Warriors (3-1, 3.2716 Heal Points) are currently second in the region, while Katahdin (2-1, 1.6049) is fourth and East Grand (1-2, 0.5556) is ninth.

The following is a recap of games played through Saturday. Monday night’s games were postponed due to the weather.

Limestone-MSSM 38, East Grand 58 — At Danforth Saturday, Haleigh Shay poured in a game-high 26 points to propel East Grand to victory. Sarah Stoddard chipped in 18 points for the Vikings.

Jackie Peers led Limestone with 13 points, while Kassee Albert chipped in nine.

The two squads were tied 13-13 at the end for the first quarter, but the Vikings took control in the second frame, leading 25-19 at the break. GHCA led 45-21 after three periods.

Houlton 69, Central 36 — At East Corinth Saturday, the Shiretowners used a balanced scoring attack to roll by the Red Devils. Kolleen Bouchard scored 16 points, while Natalie Hill and Aspen Flewelling each added 15. Katie Condon chipped in with 11 and Rylee Warman added 10.

Sydney Allen scored nine points to lead Central and Rachel Smith added eight. Kaylee Townsend grabbed 10 rebounds.

Hodgdon 39, Madawaska 55 — At Madawaska Saturday, Jenna Dugal scored 17 points to help the Owls beat the Hawks and improve to 3-1. Alexis Levesque chipped in with 12 points for the Owls and Desiree Belanger added eight.

Sydney Howell paced Hodgdon with 13 points, while Janelle Goff added seven.

Madawaska led 9-4, 26-16 and 34-23 at the quarter breaks.

Fort Fairfield 51, So. Aroostook 31 — At Dyer Brook Friday, Chelsey Pelkey scored 16 points and had seven steals as Fort Fairfield handed Southern Aroostook its first loss of the season.

With the win, the Tigers improved to 3-0. Taylor Churchill and Teressa Maynard added 13 and 10 points, respectively, for the Tigers.

For the Warriors, Kylie Vining scored 10 points, while Katelyn Slauenwhite added eight.

Fort Fairfield led 16-6, 29-19 and 41-26 at the quarter breaks.

Katahdin 60, Penquis 28 — At Milo Thursday, Katahdin’s Molly Cunningham led all scorers with 21 points to power the Cougars to victory. Georgia Landry chipped in 15 for Katahdin. Leading Penquis was Megan Valvo, who scored six points.

The Cougars led 14-8, 28-14 and 45-17 at the quarter breaks.

Easton 40, So. Aroostook 46 — At Easton Dec. 9, Sydney Brewer scored 14 points to lift Southern Aroostook to victory. Both teams stayed close throughout the contest before the Warriors pulled ahead to win by six points.

Kylie Vining and Katelyn Slauenwhite each added nine points for SACS. Elise Allen and Blake Bradley both had 10 points for Easton.

The Warriors led 14-13, 25-21 and 32-31 at the quarter breaks.

Hodgdon 31, Fort Fairfield 61 — At Fort Fairfield Dec. 9 the Tigers jumped to a 25-2 first quarter lead and never looked back in beating Hodgdon. Taylor Churchill led Fort Fairfield (2-0) with 14 points, followed by Kayla Giberson and Marissa Brouette with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Taylor Desrosiers sparked Hodgdon with 11 points and Janelle Goff chipped in five.

Fort Fairfield led 25-2, 37-4 and 53-8 at the quarter breaks.
