Katahdin boys coach resigns

STACYVILLE, Maine — The Katahdin boys basketball team found itself without a coach last week following the abrupt resignation of Harry Doughty.

RSU 50 Athletic Director/Assistant Principal Jason Tarr confirmed Monday that Doughty resigned from his post on Jan. 6, 2016. Tarr said he could not comment on the reasons for Doughty’s resignation.

RSU 50 Interim Superintendent Mike Hammer said Tuesday that Doughty had also resigned from a teaching position in the district, but declined to comment on any reasons for that resignation.

In the interim, Phil Faulkner has taken over the team and will guide the Cougars through the rest of their season.

Faulkner, who most recently served as athletic director at Katahdin Area High School, has a long history of coaching a variety of sports at the school. This past fall, Faulkner stepped up at the last minute to take over coaching duties of the Katahdin boys soccer team when no coach could be found.

“It’s great that we have someone of Phil’s caliber to call upon,” Tarr said. “The kids are in good hands. Using a person of his experience (as a coach) is a no-brainer for us.”
