Happy New Year! Hopefully, everyone enjoyed their holiday break in ways that made them happy and we have all returned, ready and rejuvenated!
We would like to extend our thanks to the many people who have purchased bracelets in support of Addie Woods and her family. The middle school student council purchased 500 bracelets to sell and we are down to less than 50! If you are interested in purchasing a bracelet, please contact the school office.
Progress reports will be going out this week to inform parents of their student’s standing at this point of the second trimester. This trimester will end on March 4, 2016. All students are encouraged to strive to get their AR reading done!
This past weekend, four Mill Pond students participated in the All Aroostook Band Festival held in Ashland. These students included Olivia Morris, Ethan Carter, Mallory Williams, and Ben Walker. The All Aroostook Choral Festival was held earlier in the month with the following students representing Mill Pond School: Fawn Brown, Dameon Sanders, Michael Sanders, Ethan Carter, Allie Winship, Aidynn Woods, Olivia Morris, Wayne Faulkner and Mallory Williams. Congratulations to these students and to Sharyn and Scott Walker for their encouragement and instruction that prepared these students for such an achievement!
Seventh grade students should be working toward earning the money needed to participate in our week at Camp Kieve in Nobleboro. As part of the seventh grade curriculum, the entire seventh grade spends a week learning through special experiences: high ropes courses, group challenges, specialized classes, and just learning more about themselves and their classmates. The life skills gained during this time away are priceless!
So, if you know a seventh grade Mill Pond student, offer them a job … shovel your walk, babysitting, walking your dog. It’s important that these students participate in earning the money to go. The PTO fundraiser held in the fall designates the profits made by seventh grade students be applied to their Kieve account. They will have another fundraising opportunity upcoming with the sale of Little Caesar’s Pizza kits. A few students have raised all or a good portion of the $105 fee just from the first fundraiser! Students and accompanying staff will be at Camp Kieve from April 25-29, 2016.
Eighth grade students and parents have been working hard to raise funds for their eighth grade trip. They will be sponsoring a semi-formal dance on Feb. 12, 2016, so save the date! More detailed information will follow!
We’d like to invite you to attend Mill Pond’s Geography Bee. It will be held on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016 at 8:30 a.m. There will be two representatives from each grade level from grades 4-8. Participating students will be Reiley Wright and Hayden Crowley, representing grade four; Abram Nason and Hope Howland, representing grade five; Jesse Sawyer and Monique Polchies, representing grade six; Aidynn Woods and Jeremiah Goff, representing grade seven; and Josh Caler and Grace Malone, representing grade eight. We hope to see a full gym on Thursday!
For those who use Facebook, please note that the district now has its own Facebook page where you can find information of anything happening within the district. Regina McCoombs is the page administrator and would be the contact person if you have something you might want included on the page.
If you are not someone who follows social media in this manner, this latest post may be of interest — the school board has scheduled a Public Hearing on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016 at 6 p.m. at the Mill Pond School on the Grade 7-8 Location Advisory Committee. The Board wants to hear comments and answer questions regarding the proposed change before making a decision. The board welcomes the input of parents, students, staff members and community members.
Finally, we hope you are getting out and enjoying the snow that has finally arrived in the County! Take a snowshoe trek or cross country ski excursion, take the kids sliding or skating or just take a quiet walk and look at the beauty around you! Winter in the County can be pretty spectacular!
