AWARD IN LEADERSHIP — Southern Aroostook High School’s Hugh O’Brien winners are Vicky Willette, left, and Tara Grant, alternate. The Hugh O’Brien Foundation sponsors a leadership seminar for sophomores each year in the hope of keeping America strong through the talents of the youths. The weekend seminar will be in May at Portland. 

 

100 Years Ago – Jan. 19, 1916

Appointed — Governor Curtis on Saturday appointed Hon. John B. Madigan of this town to the Supreme Bench to take the place of Hon. Albert M. Spear, whose appointment expires on March 1, 1916. John B. Madigan was born in Houlton, Jan. 24, 1863, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James C. Madigan, and has always lived in this town.

Trip — Chester Perry, of the J.D. Perry Jewelry store, left last week for Philadelphia where he will take a course in engraving.

75 Years Ago – Jan. 16, 1941

Mush  — Perry Greene of Warren and his seven-dog team started out after a brief rest on the North Road Tuesday afternoon. Greene and his 13-year-old companion, Johnnie Gepphart, trudge on along behind the sled in a subzero gale, alternately bucking drifts and scrambling over bare stretches of road as they neared Houlton in their 450-mile trek from Fort Kent to Kittery in quest of a new dog-team record for the Eastern United States.

 Please return  — The Houlton Woman’s Club made an appeal for the return of about 25 milk bottles which were still out. The milk program is again in full swing. “Each two bottles for which the club has to pay deprives three undernourished children of a day’s milk which we could otherwise buy,” said one of the officers.

50 Years Ago – Jan. 20 , 1966

Christmas card — Carla Crawford, 9-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Crawford, couldn’t contain her pride when showing her holiday greeting card received from President and Mrs. Johnson. Carla, a fourth-grade student at Central School, had sent the president a Christmas card, adding a personal note inviting Mr. Johnson and his wife to visit Maine. Carla received a card which said, “Thank you for your holiday greeting and best wishes for happiness in the New Year.” It was signed by Lyndon B. Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson.

 Honored — Mrs. Ethlyn Ormsby was honored Sunday by the adult department of the Sunday School of the Military Street Baptist Church during the opening exercises with Mrs. Doris Moody, retiring Sunday School superintendent, presiding. Mrs. Ormsby was honored for 55 years at the Sunday School.

25 Years Ago – Jan. 16, 1991

Open house — An open house was hosted by the children of Erma and Calvin Crandall honoring them on their 60th wedding anniversary Nov. 24 at the Oakfield Baptist Church vestry. The couple were married on Nov. 24, 1930, at the Oakfield Baptist Church by Rev. Woods.

New business — Gregor’s, located at 39 North Street, is open for business offering pizza and a variety of sandwiches along with salads and grilled foods for take-out. Attending the ribbon cutting were: Heidi Lee and Nancy Ketch from the Chamber of Commerce, Katie and Carey Gregor, owners, Andy Mooers of the Chamber of Commerce, Lew Bone, Houlton town manager and Michael McLaughlin of the Town Council.
