Editor’s Note: The following article is a synopsis written by staff members and volunteers of the Cary Memorial Library in Houlton highlighting one of the suggested reading books, as determined by the staff.
Ever tried to make sounds like a whale? Ever tried to call a whale to you? Well, then, ever talked to a polar bear? “Bear Report” by Thyra Heder is just what you need to help you learn.
Sometimes school assignments are dull and some are quite exciting as Sophie’s imagination runs wild and the creature she is making her report about turns up in her home and the great adventure begins.
In her visit to the North Pole Sophie admires the ice and snow; learns to eat “fish sticks”. Although she believed there was nothing else there, the bear shows her how to make music and the names of many animals under the snow and ice- then when they need help the whale music comes in really handy.
Sophie’s report must have been a teacher’s joy to read as it WAS more than “Bears are big”, “Bears are mean”, and “Bears eat things”.
Pictures are dreamy and surely do look cold. When you read this story to your child (children) keep eyes open for the glacier mouse…
