Presque Isle cheerleaders capture Aroostook League title

HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton cheering squad picked up a pair of runners-up trophies over the long weekend, finishing second in the Aroostook League cheerleading championship Friday, followed by a second-place finish at the Penobscot Valley Conference Championships Monday at Stearns High School.

“The girls gave their best performance thus far (Monday),” coach Renae Foley said. “They have worked hard this season. Using the judge’s score sheets, we will be perfecting the routine and getting ready for the Eastern Maine Cheering Competition Saturday.”

The Shires will compete in the Class C North regionals at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor Saturday at 2:15 p.m.

Hodgdon will compete in the Class D North regionals starting at 11:45 a.m.

At the PVC Class C event, team scores were: 1, Orono 66.1; 2, Houlton, 62.6; 3, Central, 60.7; 4, Bucksport, 56.5; 5, Sumner, 54.2; 6, Washington Academy, 47; 7, Penquis, 46; 8, Dexter, 41.6; and 9, Mattanawcook Academy, 40.3.

At the County Championships Friday, Presque Isle High School recorded 66.8 points to capture the championship. Houlton finished second with 63.3 points, followed by Caribou (59.7), Central Aroostook of Mars Hill (55.9), Fort Fairfield (48.1) and Hodgdon (44.4).

Presque Isle also received four awards for best dance team as well as best in motions, jumps and stunts. Fort Fairfield took home the spirit award, and Houlton captured best tumbling honors.

Members of the Houlton squad include: Taylor Barnes, Abby Fore, Katie Knights, Chloe Davis, Sarah Delano, Medinah Diane, Hannah Foley, Lexi Fore, Hannah Jacobs, Toni MacDonald, Rachel Toupin, Alexis Miller, Cassie Butler, Anessa Wilde, Taylor Cowan, Breanna Croxen, Makenzie Fitzpatrick, Gabby Guiod, Yasmine Hatch, Hannah Pierce, Claire Gilpatrick, Jillian Haggerty and Emma Huot. The coaches are Foley and Julie Dunn.

Members of the Hodgdon squad include: Olivia Carr, Shelby Sanders, Mckenzie Hipsley, Kate Smith, Branden Pitts, Anna Neher, Carey Suitter, Mercedez Brown and Victoria Morris. The coach is Deanna Boisvert.
